A Guide to the MOT Test
The MOT Test - The Law
Driving a vehicle without a valid certificate carries a £1,000 fine, with no appeal.
"Use, cause or permit a vehicle to be used on a road without a test certificate is an offence under Section 47, RTA 1988.
Penalty: Fine of up to £2,500 (if the vehicle has 8 or more seats), £1,000 (otherwise). "
The MOT Certificate
This confirms that at the time of testing the vehicle passed the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law. Whilst your vehicle is approved as being roadworthy, this is not a guarantee that it will be for the duration of the certificate.
When does a vehicle need an MOT test?
A valid MOT certificate is required when a car has been registered for three or more years. This requirement starts on the vehicle's third anniversary. The MOT scheme is primarily a road safety measure designed to ensure as far as possible that all cars, motorcycles and light goods vehicles are properly maintained.
Validity and renewal:
The certificate is valid for 12 months from the date of issue, except when a vehicle is taken for test in the month before the expiry date of its current certificate. In this case, if it passes the test, and if the current certificate is produced, the new certificate will be dated 12 months from the expiry date of the current certificate. So why leave it to the last minute, book now?
How to ensure that your car is running at its best
The MOT test does not cover the entire mechanical condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, and it is always recommended that the vehicle is serviced regularly, as well. You can also take the opportunity to make savings on your fuel bills by getting a Green Efficiency Check. This checks whether your car is running as efficiently as it should - you'll be amazed at the increase in fuel efficiency that can be achieved.
